Travel Trivia - Solar power on a City and Regional scale.

While travelling through the western NSW mining town of Broken Hill I was arrested by the sight of a huge area covered by solar panels, I would guess more than 100 acres in area. In the background was an old coal fired power station still operating, presumably for covering solar deficit periods. This city originally supplied silver, lead, zinc, gold and copper to the world, and it still does, and is the original mining site of the BHP-Billiton company, the largest mining conglomerate on the planet. This city is a survivor among mining towns since the 1870's, and being 1200 km west of Sydney and some 800 km north-east of Adelaide, is not a candidate to benefit from the coal fired mains power grids of eastern or central Australia. It took four photographs from a distance of about 1 km from the Solar Power Station on the Barrier Highway to cover the extent of this solar array. A huge investment in the future by a city which knows about surviving. I am in awe of the character and leadership of this city.
If only its courage could be reflected in the leadership of the nation.
